Economics at York climbs in 2019 rankings on improved student satisfaction

Our department has been ranked seven places up at number 12 in the 2019 Guardian league table as a result of our NSS success last summer.

Economics at York has also climbed three places within a year in the subject tables of the Complete University Guide, and solidified its position in the top 20 among UK economics departments. The improvement in the ranking has ben driven by our strong showing and improved student satisfaction since summer 2017.

The 2017 National Student Survey scores of Economics at York were some of the highest of the research-intensive universities. Among Russell Group Economics departments, York was ranked top for Assessment and Feedback, top for Academic Support, and second for Overall Satisfaction with an approval rating of 91%.

Prof Jo Swaffield, Head of Economics at York, said: "The improved rankings are a reflection of our continuing efforts to provide high-quality degree programmes as well as the best possible student experience in terms of support, engagement and academic community.

"We are delighted that our 2017 graduates had such a positive experience and we are working hard to ensure our current and incoming students will also have a similarly positive experience with us."

"The class of 2017 was the first cohort that benefited fully from our revamped curriculum. The department has put a lot of thought and resources into the redesign of our undergraduate programme. We take these results as an encouragement to develop the programmes further so that we continue to provide top-level training in all aspects of economics in a way that engages students, and is relevant for their life after university."

Dr Joao Madeira, Senior Undergraduate Admissions Tutor added: "The improved position in the rankings will bring wider recognition of the value of studying Economics at the University of York and therefore be beneficial for staff, students and alumni.”

In addition to York being an excellent place to study for students, with Gold award in the Teaching Excellence Framework, Economics at York continues to be ranked in the global top 100 for research excellence in the prestigious Tilburg and Shanghai rankings confirming us as a research intensive and student-focussed Economics Department.
