Information for parents

In James College, we do our best to provide information and reassurance to our students' families. We encourage all our students' families to find out about the college system and what James can offer our students. On arrivals day, we put on a Welcome Talk specifically for our students' parents and carers, to provide you with information and answer your questions. This is delivered three times on arrivals day, to make sure you can attend whatever time you're bringing our students to us.

Parents and carers can be assured that we are just as concerned about your loved one's wellbeing as we are about their academic studies and performance.  That’s why the University of York provides a range of services to ensure that advice, guidance and practical support is available when a student needs it so they can address any of the challenges they may face. 

Student information

We treat all our students as adults who can function independently within our academic community. Neither University policy nor UK law allows us to disclose any information about a student (unless under the age of 18) without their express consent to any third party – even a parent – except in an emergency. 

The College Team

A key part of your son or daughter's support network is the College Team who can help with most day to day matters and can direct students to where they can get additional help for themselves. 

If you do contact the College Team with a concern we will record this and act appropriately. Written notes may be made following a telephone call and as students have the right to request sight of information recorded about them we cannot guarantee that anything you say to us will be 100% confidential. Neither the College Team nor any other University Service will update you on progress nor could we even if your son or daughter asked us to, unless they were at significant risk to themselves or others. 

If you are concerned

If you have serious concerns about your son or daughter then you should encourage them to tell their College Team or Academic Supervisor and make use of the services that are freely available to them. You could help them become aware of them as part of their transition into and through University to support their becoming independent by helping them identify potential sources of support.

Sending post and parcels

A lot of students' families ask how to address parcels and important post, to make sure it arrives safely. You should address it to the student's name and room number (eg Room E/377), followed by "James College Reception, University of York YO10 5DD". It will be signed for by our Reception team, who will look after it and email the student so that they can collect it from them.
