Chemists from multiple subdisciplines, across academia and industry, and from around the world have over the last year crafted the Stockholm Declaration on Chemistry for the Future, calling for urgent action and collaboration to embed sustainability into chemistry teaching, research and application.

The declaration was contributed to and signed by Professor Helen Sneddon, Director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence at the University of York. She was also one of five speakers at the launch, which followed the 198th Nobel Symposium on the topic of Chemistry for Sustainability: Fundamental Advances.

The declaration, and talks, emphasised the role of chemistry in advancing the quality of human life, as well as acting as an aspirational, and at times provocative, challenge; outlining measures needed to transform scientific breakthroughs into positive impact for people and the planet.
