York Sport Village 3G pitch replacement
Overview
Supporting approximately 4000 bookings a year, the York Sport 3G pitches provide vital playing opportunities for student groups and community clubs of all ages and abilities. Starting June 2026 we will be replacing the existing surfaces on the York Sport Village full size 3G pitch and the adjacent 3 small 5-a-side football pitches, with renewed high quality synthetic pitch surfaces.
This upgrade will enable us to continue to support student and community sport, providing an improved year round playing environment.
Benefits
- The new surface type and shock pad provision will maximise opportunities for football and lacrosse while fully meeting the training needs of other sports including Rugby, American football, and other student and community sports clubs.
- The replacement features a new synthetic surface system compliant with FIFA Quality / FIFA Quality Pro and World Rugby standards.
- The perimeter fencing will be enhanced with upgraded netting.
- The improved facility will enhance existing 3G provision within the city and will positively contribute to the City of York Council playing pitch strategy and the collective goals of CYC, The University of York, The FA and the Football Foundation to meet existing and to increase activity levels
How will this affect me?
To minimise inconvenience while the pitches are out of service, a number of clubs and groups seeking to continue training have been successfully relocated.
University staff who previously had permission to use the York Sport Village overspill car park will no longer have access and must use alternative parking.
Sustainability
Artificial pitches are a huge part of modern community sport, standing up to hours of use every single week. However, both the University and national sports bodies are fully aware of environmental concerns around microplastics and rubber infill. Because of this, the project includes improved containment measures to cut down on rubber crumb escaping the pitch and entering the local ecosystem. York Sport also continues to engage with national federations as they test options for future developments.
