David was a LGBT+ human rights defender from Uganda, who came to York in 2010 on CAHR’s Protective Fellowship Scheme. Tragically he was murdered in Uganda in 2011.

The panel focused on The Future of Human Rights: Research, Activism, Sanctuary and Story-Telling, and included input from CAHR’s Paul Gready and powerful first hand testimony from Frank Mugisha, Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), and Fawzia Ehsani, a former minister from Afghanistan, who spoke about women’s rights. The panel was followed by the unveiling of a plaque commemorating David Kato and the opportunity to see art work generated by CAHR’s research and activist activities.
