Event details
The School’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee is pleased to invite you to our next EDI Forum. In this SBS EDI Forum, we will focus on the lived experiences of our minority ethnic staff and students, creating a space where voices can be heard, respected, and valued. We want to provide a safe and supportive environment for staff and students from a minority-ethnic background to share their experiences of working at the School, focusing on moments and situations where they have felt excluded or undervalued, as well as times where they have felt more included.
Building on the fantastic work of the No Gaps Project, this listening event is part of our wider commitment to building an inclusive and equitable School and University community. It is also a timely opportunity for us to engage with the ongoing public discourse around race, identity, and belonging. Recent events, such as the widespread display of national flags in York, have highlighted the significant negative implications of these symbols. This local situation, and the divided public opinion on the issue, underscores the vital importance of providing a space for honest and open dialogue. By listening carefully, we can learn how to better live our values of equality, diversity, and inclusion, and ensure that everyone feels they belong at SBS and the University of York.
The event is designed as a safe space for dialogue, reflection, and mutual learning. We warmly welcome contributions from staff and students who wish to share their perspectives, as well as those who wish to listen, learn, and be allies. Together, we will reflect on what more can be done — individually, collectively, and institutionally — to create a School culture in which all voices are heard and all members of our community can thrive.
Please kindly note that we will be taking some photos at the event, for marketing purposes. Please let Ali Naqvi know should you not wish to be included, either via email or at the event itself. Further information about the University’s processes for capturing photography and video can be found here.
