The Fly labs are used in research and teaching to activate the eye of the fly (Drosophila) with pre-programmed patterns of visual stimuli, and to record the responses. They provide temperature controlled environment for the fly, permitting study of temperature sensitive mutations. Using an Arduino microcontroller and custom amplifier miniaturises (and substantially reduces the costs) of a setup requiring a whole darkroom, PC, A/D card and finer optic light setup. Data from one of them is under review at PNAS - others are used in collaborations with Liverpool, Birmingham, and London.
