About the speaker

Dr Simona Valletta

Dr. Simona Valletta is a Lecturer (Teaching & Research) in Cancer Biology at the University of Manchester’s Division of Cancer Sciences and Group Leader at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre. After earning her PhD in Experimental Haematology at the University of Milan Bicocca, she conducted postdoctoral and independent research at the University of Oxford, culminating in a Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund Intermediate Research Fellowship. In 2023 she joined Manchester, where her lab investigates how the ageing bone marrow microenvironment supports acute myeloid leukaemia development, with a particular focus on targeting CCR1 to disrupt leukemic microenvironmental support. Dr. Valletta is also a committed mentor, especially empowering early-career women in academia across areas such as leadership, visibility, and career progression.
