About the speaker

Professor Janet Deane

Janet Deane is a Professor of Membrane Biology and Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, University of Cambridge. Her research deciphers how glycosphingolipid imbalances - critical components of the cell surface - drive a spectrum of diseases ranging from rare genetic neurodegeneration to more prevalent conditions like cancer and diabetes. By applying cutting-edge methods, including iPSC models, proteomics, and structural biology, her lab connects fundamental insights into lipid metabolism with therapeutic opportunities. A distinguished researcher and educator, Professor Deane was promoted to her current role in June 2024 and recognized with the Inclusive Practice Award by students. She remains committed to widening research participation through initiatives such as Experience Postgrad Life Sciences.
