Perspectives on cancer subtypes - From genomics to molecular pathology

About ten years ago, high throughput molecular techniques started to be used to classify tumors of the urinary bladder. Researchers from Lund, Sweden, were the first to publish a comprehensive taxonomy of bladder cancer subtypes based on transriptomics.

A decade later, consensus has been reached among research groups worldwide on a unified molecular subtype classification system. In this lecture, Gottfrid Sjödahl, a basic pre-clinical cancer researcher at the Department of Urology at Lund University, will present how 10 years of molecular subtyping has provided a completely new framework for understanding bladder cancer biology. An insider's perspective will be given on the effort to reconcile RNA-based subtypes with established molecular pathology.

Finally, a direction for the future will be presented along with results from ongoing projects, including longitudinal subtyping during bladder cancer progression and how prospective RNA-seq is implemented in real-time to patients operated in the south of Sweden.
