Milton P. Gordon, a University of Washington biochemistry professor and a pioneer in phytoremediation, passed away in 2005. His diverse research ranged from red-tide toxins to astrobiology, but he was particularly passionate about phytoremediation—studying and enhancing the ability of plants to detoxify environmental pollutants. He co-founded Verdant Technologies, a consulting firm focused on applying phytoremediation to hazardous waste sites, and was also known as an outstanding teacher dedicated to helping students both academically and personally.
In 2007, his colleague Steve McCutcheon proposed the Gordon Award, established by the International Phytotechnology Society, to honour Milt’s legacy. Presented annually, the award recognises researchers who embody Gordon's excellence in phytoremediation, his commitment to applied science, and his dedication to teaching and student support, inspiring future leaders in the field.
