Theatre at York

Theatre at York draws together research and practice in the dynamic and ever-evolving field of live performance. We are a community of theatre-makers, made up of playwrights, directors, designers, performers, theatre critics and researchers.

Many of our staff have extensive industry experience, and continue to work on projects in the community and nationally, such as recent playwriting commissions for Pilot Theatre and York Theatre Royal, and theatre productions touring the UK and internationally.  We also host masterclasses, talks and performances from leading theatre practitioners and companies in our dedicated theatre spaces.

Driven by a sense that theatre is a vital and powerful artform we explore the complex relationships between text and performance, combining practical exploration with cultural, political, and aesthetic analysis. With expertise spanning a wide range of areas and eras, recent examples of our work include theatre in Jewish Ghettos in the 1930s, the challenges of playing real people, ecodramaturgy, the role of women in contemporary British theatre, decolonisation and diversification in pedagogy, and the use of robots, voice, and light in performance.  Our work explores theatre in dialogue with urgent and varied social contexts, and we encourage you to join the conversation!

Our facilities include three professional HD television studios, theatre stages, post-production suites and a 140-seat 4K digital cinema with surround sound.
83.3% of our research across film, theatre, television and interactive media is rated 4* (REF 2021).
