Complete the new environmental sustainability induction for staff
Posted on Wednesday 3 June 2026
Explore how we can collaborate to create a culture of sustainability at the University of York.
World Environment Day 2026 takes place on 5 June, focusing on climate change, the urgent signals our planet is sending and the action we can take in response. To mark the day, we are encouraging staff to complete the University’s new environmental sustainability induction and explore how we can respond together to climate change, biodiversity loss, and overconsumption.
This 20-minute, self-paced training highlights what’s already happening across the University, practical actions you can take, and how we can all help drive positive change.
What the induction covers
The induction encourages staff to imagine what a more environmentally sustainable University of York could look and feel like if sustainability informed the way we work, learn, and collaborate.
The induction introduces:
- The scale and urgency of the climate and ecological crises.
- Environmental sustainability at the University of York and the work already underway.
- Practical actions staff can take within their own role and sphere of influence.
- How sustainability connects to areas such as travel, procurement, energy, food, research, education, finance, and the use of generative AI.
- Ways to advocate for positive change and challenge unsustainable practices.
- Opportunities to engage with sustainability networks, communities, and further training across the University.
How to take the induction
All staff are encouraged to complete the induction as part of their professional development and induction journey.
- Duration: approximately 20 minutes
- Format: self-paced online training (via LMS, login required)
- Availability: open to all University of York staff
We welcome your feedback on this pilot induction. Please email esay@york.ac.uk with any comments or suggestions on how we can improve the induction.
