Explore how we can collaborate to create a culture of sustainability at the University of York.

Environmental sustainability is a core principle of the University of York. This 20-minute, self-paced induction introduces the environmental challenges we face, actions already taking place across the University, and the ways all staff can contribute to a more sustainable future, whatever their role.

Why this induction matters

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution present urgent global challenges that require action across every part of society.

This induction has been developed to help all staff understand how environmental sustainability connects to the University’s mission for public good, and how it can be embedded into everyday decisions and ways of working.

Whether you work in professional services, research, teaching, leadership, operations, or support roles, everyone has a part to play in creating a culture that supports environmental Sustainability at the University of York.

What the induction covers

The induction introduces:

  • The scale and urgency of the climate and ecological crises.
  • Environmental sustainability at the University of York and the work already underway.
  • Practical actions staff can take within their own role and sphere of influence.
  • How sustainability connects to areas such as travel, procurement, energy, food, research, education, finance, and the use of generative AI.
  • Ways to advocate for positive change and challenge unsustainable practices.
  • Opportunities to engage with sustainability networks, communities, and further training across the University.
