New floating wetland being installed on Campus West lake

A new floating wetland will be launched on Campus West lake later this week as one of the flagship projects in our new Ecological Management Plan, helping to enhance biodiversity and naturally filter the water.
Located between Biology and Eric Milner White accommodation on Campus West, it will grow into a safe sanctuary for birds, pollinators and fish, protected from people and predators.
A flagship project
The floating wetland is a flagship project in the University's Ecological Management Plan (EMP), which was launched earlier in 2026. The EMP sets out inclusive, sustainable and practical actions to enhance biodiversity, sustainability and wellbeing across our campus by bringing together all of the initiatives that have an impact on biodiversity and its interaction with campus life.
By bringing together students, staff and faculties, the EMP aims to identify opportunities, share resources and develop solutions that benefit the University community and the wider public good.
The floating wetland will be installed on Thursday and Friday. We encourage you to take a walk and see the wetland develop over time.
