Green Impact

Recognising and rewarding staff for their sustainable practices, regardless of the workplace setting.

Green Impact is a sustainability accreditation programme that recognises and rewards environmental practices among staff and students in colleges and departments. Teams work through a workbook to complete sustainability actions and earn points. There are bronze, silver, gold, platinum and diamond (for teams who have achieved Platinum for 5 years in a row) levels.

Launch event for 2026/27

Interested in joining Green Impact this year? Come along to our welcome event on 1 October, which will include an overview of both Green Impact and Green Impact Lab Accreditation (GILA). There will also be an optional talk about our new campus floating wetland. Book your place.

What is Green Impact?

Green Impact is a sustainability programme with an awards element designed for teams and departments. The model has been developed by SOS-UK and has been used by more than 2,000 organisations across the world. Green Impact is all about building a community of staff and students learning about sustainability and working together to create positive change.

Since Green Impact launched at the University of York in 2011, more than 13,000 actions have been completed by teams, more than 580 students have volunteered, and more than 360 awards have been presented.

This was our first time going for a Green Impact award, and the level of support was excellent. For our department, the will was there; Green Impact gave it shape, helped us get a better grip on our priorities, and gave us a network of students and staff that goes beyond our subject area.

Rob Jenkins, Psychology Department

Green Impact Laboratory Accreditation (GILA)

Green Impact Lab Accreditation (or GILA) was created in 2025 specifically to support research wet labs to achieve an approved sustainability accreditation in order to apply to certain funding bodies.

Each participating laboratory completes the necessary actions, is audited, then receives a nationally standardised GILA certificate. The certificate demonstrates progress towards embedding sustainability in research.

Getting started

Find out how you can get involved as a staff member or student.

If you're a staff member or postgraduate student you can take part by joining your departmental team, or by creating a new team.
Students (undergraduate and masters) have the opportunity to get involved with Green Impact by volunteering either as a Green Impact Project Assistant or a Green Impact Auditor. Keep an eye on this page for upcoming opportunities.

Key information

Use the dropdowns below to find out more about Green Impact, what it involves, who can take part, and the process to achieve an award.

How does it work?

Green Impact is a programme where teams made up of staff and students can choose to complete a project or work through a list of suggested sustainability actions. The actions are managed through an interactive online workbook, providing team members with a framework to implement sustainable changes in their workplace. There are over 170 tasks to choose from, all applicable to different University workplaces including labs, offices, colleges, and home working, giving teams flexibility to choose and complete actions suited to their specific working environment.

Each action is clear and simple to implement, with additional guidance provided, and is scored depending on the amount of impact that it has on making your work more sustainable. Teams are also invited to share ideas, ask questions and exchange advice with one another via a dedicated online channel, fostering collaboration and collective learning. Points are tallied up midway through Semester 2, and will result in your team receiving a Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond award, following an audit of evidence by trained volunteer student auditors.

Projects offer teams the opportunity to focus on developing a sustainability initiative of their choosing instead of, or in addition to, working through the Toolkit actions. Teams undertaking a project will identify a sustainability project to implement in their workplace and submit a project plan before working on their project directly for that academic year. Once complete, teams will submit a case study of their project, detailing its reach and impact. The project plan and case study will be audited by trained volunteer student auditors and teams will receive a Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond award.

Who can get involved?

Both staff and students at the University can get involved in Green Impact.

If you're a staff member or postgraduate you can take part by joining your departmental team, or by creating a new team.

If you're a student, you can volunteer to be a Green Impact Project Assistant or Green Impact Auditor. Apply now to be a Green Impact Project Assistant. Keep an eye on this page for upcoming opportunities.

Sign up to the Sustainability newsletter for updates on opportunities to get involved.

The process
  1. Express your interest in joining by emailing greenimpact@york.ac.uk, stating your department and localised work team.
  2. Register with an existing team or create a new one by registering on the University’s Green Impact Online Toolkit.
  3. Work through the interactive online workbook to make positive changes within your department or office.
  4. Gather evidence of your positive actions, earn points, and work your way up the levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum).
  5. Your team has until early March to complete as many actions as you can, and submit your toolkit for your Green Impact award. You can also request a student Green Impact Project Assistant to help you achieve them.
  6. Student volunteer auditors will then check that the workbooks have been completed.
  7. All awards are presented annually in June, accompanied by a celebratory lunch.
  8. There are also special awards for efforts above and beyond the workbook. You can also choose to do a project based award, which focuses on one action and its spread through the University and the community.
Guidance and support

Access the workbook on the Green Impact Online Toolkit, which contains all essential information about completing the criteria, including links to relevant resources and key contacts.

Also find more resources, including starting guides and templates.

Green Impacts’ Resource Bank contains templates to help you in completing some of the criteria.

You can also join the Green Impact Slack Channel (#green-impact) for tips and support from other teams across the University.

For other questions and queries, you can email greenimpact@york.ac.uk

Bespoke Green Impact Projects 2026

Instead of (or alongside) completing the workbook, your team can choose to undertake a unique sustainability project. Projects can be awarded with either a Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond award, depending on their scope. Here are some examples of projects that have been completed in 2026:

The Adventures of The Little Green Chemist sought to promote green and sustainable laboratory practices across the University and beyond, with Green Chemistry being awarded Platinum for the campaign.
Baby Friendly Gold established breastfeeding support for the local and University community, whilst also raising awareness and understanding of positive sustainable breastfeeding.
