Statement on Academic Freedom and Freedom of Speech
The University's foundational commitment to academic freedom and freedom of speech is set out in our Charter. It is also fundamental to our Strategy, with our core principle of equality, diversity and inclusion stating that freedom of inquiry and expression are central to intellectual advancement and to social and economic development.
In addition to being central to our values, academic freedom and freedom of speech are governed by UK law. The University and York SU have worked together to agree our joint Code of Practice on Academic Freedom and Freedom of Speech which applies to students, staff and anyone visiting the University for a formal activity eg as a speaker at an event or as a visiting lecturer.
This code ensures that all members of our community can engage in vigorous enquiry, discussion and debate in a spirit of fairness and mutual respect. This applies to all activity carried out in the University’s physical and online spaces, or elsewhere in its name, including learning, research, day-to-day work and organised speakers or discussions. As a member of the University, you should expect to encounter challenging views, discussions or content, recognising that the legal bar for restricting speech is high. At the same time, the University will deal robustly with any behaviour which amounts to bullying and/or harassment. We provide guidance for organising potentially sensitive events, and offer clear complaints routes to raise concerns.
