Planning and Risk Office services

We work with academic departments to develop and monitor plans that incorporate student recruitment, research, staffing and financial elements. We do so by working with Heads of Department and Departmental Management Teams (DMT). We organise the annual Planning Committee strategic planning meetings that discuss long term strategy and co-ordinate subsequent meetings to discuss income and cost inputs to departmental budgets that cover the forthcoming four year period.  We also work with support directorates on their plans and budgets.


Strategic planning

We support academic departments and support directorates through their strategic planning meetings with Planning Committee, which are chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost.  These meetings consider the current position of the department /directorate and its development over the longer term.  It also sets the budget target for academic departments for the coming four year period.

New academic programmes

New academic programmes require the approval of the relevant Dean and Dean's Support Group, and either University Teaching Committee or the York Graduate Research School.

Medium-term planning and budgeting

Alongside other colleagues in the support directorates we work with academic department DMTs through the year to help them in their development of detailed four year plans and budgets.  Departments are set a financial target for each year of the four year budgeting period in December each year.  Planning officers work alongside staff with specialist expertise (in student recruitment, research grant management and management accountants) to develop realistic estimates for income streams and appropriate cost plans that enable the target to be delivered.

Planning Officers work alongside DMTs to monitor delivery of the plan and track changes in the external environment and in internal performance that may impact on the ability to deliver its ambitions.

Planning Officers also work with Centre heads and Heads of Department to ensure that the work of interdepartmental centres is incorporated into this process.
