Why do two people with apparently similar strokes recover in very different ways?

Traditional approaches focused on where damage occurs, but Professor Beth Jefferies’ research shows that this is only part of the story.

What matters just as much is how the rest of the brain is organised and how it changes through time.

Rather than treating the brain as a collection of isolated regions, her research examines how patterns of interaction across the whole cortex shape cognition, recovery and flexibility.

After injury, outcomes depend not simply on what is lost, but on how remaining systems adapt, coordinate, and sometimes compensate.

“The answer lies in how the whole brain is organised and how its networks adapt over time,” Beth explains. “Recovery depends not just on what is damaged, but on how remaining systems coordinate and support different functions.”

This perspective has important clinical implications.

By understanding the organisation of an individual’s brain networks, it may become possible to predict which cognitive functions are most vulnerable, which are likely to recover, and how rehabilitation might best be targeted.

Rather than one-size-fits-all approaches, treatment could be informed by each person’s unique brain architecture.

Beyond clinical neuroscience, Beth’s research addresses fundamental questions about human cognition: how meaning is constructed, how attention fluctuates and how the brain balances inner thought with demands from the outside world.

Across health and disease, her work seeks to explain how flexible brain organisation supports flexible minds.

In recognition of these contributions, Beth was elected a Fellow of The British Academy in 2024.
