Mature students

In recent years about 13% of our new students have been mature students and in some departments the proportion is much higher. Mature students come to us from a wide range of backgrounds with qualifications ranging from conventional A levels to Access and Foundation courses.

Entry requirements

The specific entry requirements for each department or programme are listed in our current prospectus. However, entry requirements for mature applicants are not totally rigid and can vary from one individual to another. Departments are looking for:

  • evidence of your ability to study at the required level
  • evidence of relevant experience or interest in relation to the subject

Advice and support for mature students

Our academic departments are experienced in advising mature students and you should contact the department you are interested in for specific advice.

For more general information, including visiting the campus and Open Days, please see: www.york.ac.uk/openday or call +44 (0)1904 323196 or email admissions-liaison@york.ac.uk.

The UCAS website has information for mature students.

Mature Student Association

For current students, the active Mature Students Association (MSA) group on campus organises events and activities for mature students. At the beginning of the new academic year all new mature students are invited to attend a welcome lunch and this gives you the opportunity to meet other mature students from across the campus.
