York Talks returns with bitesize research lectures

York Talks is a day of free, 15 minute talks showcasing innovative research happening at York – from using maths to promote fertility and thinking of new methods to tackle food waste, to the biological life of robots and how academics are tackling global terrorism.

Sixteen short talks will be grouped together in sessions of four, followed by a Q&A, throughout the day. Anyone can attend a single session or all four.

PhD students will also take part in a ‘Research Spotlight’ exhibition displaying their work, and be on hand to answer questions during programme breaks. A judging panel will then award prizes for the best exhibition piece.

Professor Koen Lamberts, Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of York, said: “The University of York is home to an extraordinary range of innovative and diverse research. York Talks is an excellent way for the community to engage with our researchers and learn more about how our academics are working to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges.”

Professor Nicky Milner, Lecturer in York’s Department of Archaeology who is hosting a talk on the buried history of Star Carr, said: “It is a real pleasure to be asked to showcase one of our most exciting discoveries from Star Carr: 11,000 year old antler headdresses. The public have been extremely supportive of our project and we feel it is very important to make our research accessible and available to the wider community. York Talks provide a great opportunity to do that.”
