An Executive Chef at the University of York has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the latest Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Andrew Wood, who is awarded the BEM for services to higher education and university catering, joined the University of York in 2002. He is now campus Food Development Manager, overseeing all the University’s kitchens and menus.

Gaining his catering qualifications at York College before attending Scarborough College to specialise in pastry, Mr Wood has also worked in Germany, at the London Ritz and as Head Chef at York's Middlethorpe Hall. Before joining the University of York, he worked as a lecturer at York College.

Andrew Wood said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been honoured with such an award; it came as a total shock and surprise when the news came through.

“I feel very lucky to have received an award for doing something that I really enjoy and it means a great deal to me. The University has been fantastic with me ever since I first arrived some 12 years ago, and I have the pleasure of working alongside some great people who enable me to do the job I do on a daily basis.”
