Lord Mayor of York's Brunei connection

Posted on 23 November 2011

Two civil servants who work in the Prime Minister's Office in Brunei will meet the Lord Mayor of York this week to discuss the city's strategy to promote itself abroad.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor David Horton, will meet Haji Dayang Hj Kasim and Khairol Azli Kassim, who are studying at the Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT) at the University of York, at the Mansion House on Thursday 24 November.

These classes are open for all York students and some of them are also open to members of the public so they have the chance to mix with people from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds

Khairol Azli Kassim is a public relations manager in the Media and Cabinet Division in the Prime Minister's Office and Haji Dayang Hj Kasim is an Information Officer with the Information Department.

Khairol, who graduated from Glamorgan University in 2001, is studying at CELT to improve his English Language and communication skills and he is also studying best practice to share with colleagues in Brunei. Dayang, who graduated from the University of Brunei, Darussalam, also wants to improve his written and spoken English as well as acquaint himself with the variety of regional accents in Britain.

Their study programme includes a tailored component to assist them with their work, as well as the opportunity to work with and shadow staff in the University’s International Relations and Press Offices. They also attend a range of CELT's in-sessional courses such as Advanced Academic Writing and Everyday Speaking and Listening with the aim of developing their communication skills in English.

CELT’s Academic Programme Manager, Matt Smelt-Webb, said: “These classes are open for all York students and some of them are also open to members of the public so they have the chance to mix with people from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds. The meeting with the Lord Mayor will form the basis of a mock press conference that they will give at the end of their studies in York.”

Khairol said: “It is a great honour to meet the Lord Mayor and we are looking forward to hearing how the City of York promotes itself internationally.”

The Lord Mayor said:  “Exchange of information and ideas is a vital element of partnership working. I am delighted to welcome Dayang and Khairol to the Mansion House, and talk to them about York and the work being done to promote the city overseas.”
