Law practice makes perfect for University orchestra

Posted on 27 February 2008

The University of York Symphony Orchestra is to perform two classic works by Tchaikovsky and Mahler, thanks to sponsorship from York-based solicitors Harrowells.

Conducted by John Stringer of the University’s Department of Music, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s popular Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra, featuring the young cello soloist Tim Lowe, who is now being billed as a future star of the orchestral world. Tim Lowe grew up in York his mother, Sue, teaches cello at the University and his father, Dr Stuart Lowe, is a member of staff in the University’s Department of Social Policy and Social Work.

[Harrowells'] sponsorship has enabled the orchestra to....engage an outstanding young professional soloist

Dr Jonathan Wainwright

The variations will be followed by Gustav Mahler’s monumental fifth symphony, an epic work which tackles human emotions opening with a funereal trumpet solo and building to a triumphant climax.

Dr Jonathan Wainwright, Head of the Department of Music, said: "We are very grateful to Harrowells for supporting the University Symphony Orchestra. Their sponsorship has enabled the orchestra to perform in the larger venue of Central Hall and to engage an outstanding young professional soloist."

Richard Hugill, solicitor specialising in Litigation and Dispute Resolution said: "We are thrilled our sponsorship means that we are helping a future young star as well as the University of York Symphony Orchestra. We feel this is very worthwhile for York and wish all the musicians the best of luck. We are looking forward to a pleasant evening on 5 March."

The 105-strong orchestra will perform on Wednesday 5 March in the University’s Central Hall, starting at 7:30pm.

Tickets: £15 (£14 concessions); £13 (£12); £11 (£10); £7 (£6); Students £3; under 16s admitted free with adult ticketholder (one per adult)
