Posted on 12 January 1998

Professor Richard Parish has joined the Department of Health Studies at the University of York as Head of Department.

Professor Parish was previously Director of the School of Health and Community Studies and Professor of Public Health at Sheffield Hallam University. Prior to that he was Chief Executive and Principal of Humberside College of Health.

Professor Parish has extensive experience in the field of health promotion, having been Director of Programmes for the Health Promotion Authority in Wales. He is looking forward to continuing his interest and work in this field, through the Department's close working relationship with the North Yorkshire Specialist Health Promotion Service.

For many years he has worked as a consultant to the World Health Organisation and acted as an adviser on public health policy to a number of European countries.

"I am looking forward to expanding the range of teaching and research activity in the Department of Health Studies," said Professor Parish. "The Department's work in nursing, management and health care leadership broadens the University of York's already considerable expertise and reputation in health-related work. I particularly look forward to new developments in the Department's relationship with the Health Service
