Major Policy Expert, Lord Liddle, to launch York Festival of Ideas at York Professionals Annual Dinner

Ron Cooke Hub, 5 June 2013

Policy expert and business leader, Lord Roger Liddle, will launch the York Festival of Ideas at the York Professionals Annual Dinner on 5 June at the Ron Cooke Hub.

York Festival of Ideas and York Professionals logos‌The York Festival of Ideas has secured a partnership with the York Professionals business networking organisation to launch its programme, ‘North and South’ at the event at which Lord Liddle will give a talk entitled, “Dis-United Kingdom in a Convulsing Europe and a Changing World”.

The thorny topic of Europe - and Britain’s sometimes fractious relationship with it - will form the core of Lord Liddle’s talk. The current debate over a possible Referendum on Britain’s EU membership makes this a dinner not to be missed.

Lord Liddle will explore the growing tensions between the North and the South, discuss ideas of Englishness and Britishness and the future of the UK's place in Europe and the world.  It provides a great opportunity to hear first-hand what the potential implications on business in York will be.

Rachel Goddard, Chair of York Professionals, said: “We are pleased to launch the 2013 York Festival of Ideas which has a really strong programme of events. The Festival includes a major focus on the economic response to the Age of Austerity and an exploration of what is required to make the economy grow and in particular how businesses in York can respond to the growing globalised challenge. It is a great thrill that Lord Liddle will join us to debate these issues. He is a major expert in European policy-making and his career has spanned the private sector, working at the heart of the European Union advising Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Union, as well working as a senior government advisor.”

Joan Concannon, the Director of the Festival of Ideas, added: “We are really extremely pleased that York Professionals have agreed to help launch our programme. The Festival of Ideas was founded on an ethos of bringing world-class speakers to York and to showcase the dynamism and innovation that we see all around us in the city. The theme of ‘North and South’ lends itself to a comprehensive exploration of how York can consolidate and enhance its economic strength. I look forward very much to Lord Liddle’s contribution to the debate’.

A limited number of tickets are still available to attend the dinner and are available by contacting Jo Pickering on 01904 435363 or emailing admin@york-professionals.co.uk. The booking deadline is Friday 31 May.

The 2013 York Festival of Ideas is a diverse and stimulating programme of mostly free events taking place across the city and the University of York campus between 13 and 29 June on the theme of 'North and South'.
