Welcome to the Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy aims to bring together original research and stimulating teaching in an informal, friendly setting. On these pages you will find information about our research and teaching, about our staff and students, and about our activities and publications.

Our research strengths fall in three main areas: ethics, history of philosophy, and philosophy of mind. We have additional strengths in aesthetics and metaphysics, and collaborate with the Departments of Politics and Economics through the School of Politics, Economics and Philosophy. We have recently established a Centre for Research into Imagination, Creativity and Knowledge (CRICK), to bring together those working in the areas of philosophy of mind and aesthetics and to forge links with researchers outside the department and with the wider community.

From 2010 we are introducing a new undergraduate programme. The first year will remain much as it has, but we have introduced a system of pathways in the second year, opening the way to a range of higher-level options in the third year. We hope that this will offer students a rich and exciting programme, combining a firm grounding in central areas of philosophy with opportunities for working with our academic staff at the cutting edge of philosophical research.

Over the summer, following a redesign, our web pages are being updated with new material added. There may be some temporary omissions. If there is anything you wish to know that you cannot find, please contact the departmental office.
