About Bike Rescue:

Established in 2006; Bike Rescue aim is to remove bicycles destined for landfill from amenity sites in North Yorkshire, The Bike Rescue Project has thrived thanks to its dedicated supporters and staff. Between 2006-2011, approximately 10,000 bicycles were saved from landfill, many of them are beautiful vintage or veteran machines which have miles of tarmac or country lanes still to explore and are looking for loving owners, already 6,000 of them have been refurbished and given new homes, the rest stripped for parts. Bike Rescue aim is to provide quality affordable transport that does not cost the earth; they also pride themselves in giving expert advice and assistance to new cyclists or visitors. As well as the cycling facilities that you will find at the Hub Station, they offer volunteering opportunities and work placements for students and unemployed people.

Bike Rescue is a Community Interest Company, this means that they trade as a social business for the benefit of the community, they rely on donations of bikes and loyal customers to keep the scheme financially solvent. Through lots of hard work and careful planning, and with the help of people too numerous to mention, Bike Rescue has almost achieved its goal of becoming self sustaining. They have a core staff of approximately 9 people, including 3 trainees, and many volunteers (if you would like to join the crew contact Bike Rescue direct).

Since beginning with 57 bikes in a back garden and a cabinet on wheels full of old tools, they have grown massively; after four years of fund-raising and planning 2011 has seen the triumphant opening of our ‘Hub Station’ facility; to find cross over the Millennium Bridge and follow the river into town, you can’t miss them at Lendal Bridge in the city centre
