Event details

The Global Day of Action works to connect university legal clinics across the world to join together in an effort to raise awareness for the climate emergency. Previously we have had over 40 legal clinics involved, from Melbourne to Delhi, and have addressed subjects such as air pollution and the rights of nature. The theme of this year's clinic will be 'Plastics'.

Since 1950, the amount of plastic produced globally is estimated to be around 9.2 bn tons. Microplastics in our water are damaging marine life and fumes released from factory plants have been linked to a multitude of illnesses. The overwhelming consumption of plastic disproportionately damages marginalised communities and so it is clear that, as a social justice issue, it deserves a central place on the law curriculum.

On 17 November, we propose a worldwide recognition of this, through encouraging legal clinics to host events and activities in their communities and promoting awareness of the plastics crisis. Here at the University of York will then connect and celebrate the work through our social media networks.

'Kick the Habit'

An outcome of the Global Day of Action 2019, in collaboration with the City of York Council.

Responsible for over 30,000 deaths each year and a cause of long-term health problems in children, air pollution is a serious issue. In 2019, City of York Council launched ‘Kick the Habit’, an anti-idling campaign which encourages drivers to switch their engines off whilst stationary, in a bid to help reduce air pollution in the city.

As part of the University of York Law Department's response to COP26, we are reigniting this campaign by supporting York City Council and urging you all to help us ‘Kick the Habit’. By simply switching your engine off, you can help us reduce the toxic emissions contaminating the city’s air, save lungs and save lives. Look out for our promotional material on campus during the week of COP26.
