Pre-sessional language courses: undergraduates 2019/20

Our pre-sessional language courses are for international students who need to meet a language condition for entry to a degree-level course at York. We also offer courses that are open to international applicants to other UK universities.

Once you've accepted your offer to study at York, you'll be able to apply for an English Language Pre-sessional course via You@York. More information will be available in late November.

English language requirements

The pre-sessional course you'll need to take depends on the English language requirement for the degree you wish to study.

Don't worry if you're not sure which pre-sessional course to apply to. After you've accepted your degree offer, we'll let you know via You@York

If you require a visa

If you're applying for a pre-sessional English course and require a Tier 4 visa then you must first take a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (gov.uk). Only IELTS for UKVI (Academic) or Trinity ISE can be accepted for entry to pre-sessional programmes.

Accommodation

We guarantee you a room on or near to campus for the duration of your pre-sessional course over the summer. We'll allocate you a room and confirm the details by email about a month before you're due to start your course.

Welcome and social programme

To help you get settled in we offer a series of welcome and orientation events on campus and in the city, with lots of opportunities to meet staff and your fellow students. We offer talks about university life and we'll help you through the enrolment process and various compliance checks to get you fully registered as a student here.

You might also be interested in getting involved with YUSU, our Students' Union. They offer support and advice and organise a varied social programme for students.
