Student Salon

Department: English & Related Literature

Project Leads: Lauren Working and Susannah Lyon-Whaley

Summary

SS proposes to replicate an immersive 17th/18th-century literary salon, a domestic space where women and men engaged in intellectual/global culture. This application is for a pilot mobile arrangement with (a) authentic, portable salon objects for class and workshop use, (b) an investment in digital space (website, resources, blog). Combining physical design with innovative pedagogy, the project will illuminate how salons-associated with intellectual exchange, daring ideas, an  'world-making'-shaped literature and society, and were shaped by cross-cultural exchange, slavery, and empire. Working with student partners in design and implementation, SS will offer a hands-on tool for education, research, and creative practice. Given the imminent King's Manor closure, it offers students the unique opportunity to authentically encounter an early modern space on campus.
