Learning from Experience: developing inter-year undergraduate student academic learning communities at York Law School
Department: York Law School
Project Leads: Sue Westwood, Patrick Gallimore
Summary
Undergraduate students benefit from peer support during the transition to higher education, especially those who are disadvantaged/marginalised. Year 1 YLS students recently requested, via the Staff-Student Forum, greater opportunities to connect with Year 2/3 students to learn from them about effective legal study skills, calibrate the standard of their assessments for degree-level studies, and engage with formative and summative assessment feedback. This project will pilot a series of facilitated plenaries and workshops at which Year 1 LLB students will engage in discussions with nominated Year 2 and Year 3 LLB students. The impact of these events will be evaluated using structured student feedback, with a view to incorporating similar activities into Year 1 programme design in future academic year, and widening this to include inter-year support for Year 2 students as well.
