Decolonising and diversifying the curriculum - developing a Faculty of Science guideline

Department: Across the Faculty of Sciences

Project Leads: Karisha George (Psychology)

Summary

Compared to the other Faculties within the University of York, the Faculty of Sciences (FoS) is far underdeveloped when it comes to decolonising and diversifying its curriculum. Initiatives thus far have had varying levels of success based on the prevailing belief that Western perspectives are the cornerstone of good science education, with the predominance of white voices being seen as unavoidable.

The project will take a coordinated approach across the Faculty, emphasising the alignment between scientific principles and decolonising and diversifying the curriculum (DDC) efforts. The project will focus on developing: 1) a toolkit to support the advancement of DDC work within FoS, and 2) a FoS DDC teaching and learning group which will generate not only a community of learning to develop, but also place strategic leaders within each Faculty to support the momentum for change.
