Summary

Part time online study has attracted several 'new' learner types and groups with differing attributes. They experience different challenges in achieving their objectives and breaking the physical and geographical barriers to university participation. This project explores attitudes to interaction between online students and the department, using questionnaires and focus groups to evaluate the effectiveness of new and existing methods in building a sense of community for learners. Project outcomes include understanding the needs of these groups, evaluating methods to build online communities and propose inclusive changes to the teaching approach. The project will be disseminated via conference presentations and pedagogical articles.
