Summary
Problem-based learning will be introduced to Economics teaching at York for the first time in September 2024, in a module taught to ca 280 students studying single-honours and interdisciplinary degrees. As PBL sessions must accommodate diverse learning needs and experiences of students, we aimed to produce resources to support an inclusive implementation of PBL. In addition, PBL can improve student employability. In doing so, it is important to understand the gap between skills employers require and skills of students from diverse backgrounds. Our aim was to also shed light on and ultimately reduce this gap. We worked with UG and PGR students to: 1) co-research the skills gap by conducting a survey and focus groups; and 2) co-develop PBL handbooks for students and facilitators.
