Deport, Deprive, Extradite

Sociology’s Dr Nisha Kapoor has recently brought out a new publication, entitled Deport, Deprive, Extradite: 21st Century State Extremism. She draws on the case studies of five Muslim men who were extradited from Britain to the US in 2012 to face terror-related charges, and their treatment by the state.
These stories act as a starting point for further investigation into the disciplinary features of state power and its securitising conditions. Nisha explores the radicalisation of Muslim men accused of terror offences, and how they are dehumanised both in terms of how they are represented and via the disciplinary techniques used to expel them. She argues that these cases illustrate how authoritarianism is intensifying and democratic systems are disappearing.
The book has received praise from several authors within the field; Arun Kundnani, author of The Muslims Are Coming, describes Nisha’s analysis as “precise, relentless, fearless”, whilst Vron Ware, author of Beyond the Pale, notes that “the work is extraordinarily important, shining a torch on the deep structures of racism that infuse the security state”.
