Researching the Frivolous - Glossy Topics Matter

Posted on 3 July 2013

Ruth Penfold-Mounce has written a blog post for the new Celebyouth Blog.

This blog is part of an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project entitled 'The role of celebrity in young people's classed and gendered aspirations' and carried out by Heather Mendick and Laura Harvey, Brunel University and Kim Allen, Manchester Metropolitan University between Sept 2012-April 2014.

The blog post considers the problem facing 'glossy topics' in challenging times within academia where issues that are interpreted as frivolous can become excluded from the research agenda. This is turn poses a problem for some research areas within the Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts which can become devalued and marginalised.

Ruth has her own blog 'Glossy Topics' where she considers issues and news stories relating to the frivolous.
