The Department of Sociology is pleased to offer an ESRC 1+3 studentship to commence in October 2010. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, Sociology was placed joint first, with 30% of its research considered to be ‘world-leading’, and a further 30% being judged as ‘internationally excellent’.
The ESRC makes full and partial funding awards. A full award covers fees and an annual, tax free stipend of £13,290 (2009/10 rates) for each year of study for UK students. EU students are eligible for tuition fees only. To be eligible for funding from the ESRC, you must meet their academic and residential eligibility criteria.
Please note that if you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you will not be eligible for this funding.
Applicants must complete two forms. The deadline for completed and submitted appllications is 4.00pm Thursday 23rd September 2010.
A shortlist of students to be given further consideration for the awards will be made on assessment of these internal Departmental forms and references.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview as soon as possible after closing. These will take place on Thursday 7th October 2010.
Please note: to ensure that your proposal is as strong as possible, it is essential that you discuss your research plans with your prospective supervisor.
It is also advisable that you discuss with your intended supervisor whether your research ideas fall into the remit of the ESRC (information about the research supported by the Councils is available on their websites.)
