ESRC 1+3 Quota Award Application and Procedure

One ESRC 1+3 studentship, commencing October 2010

Sociology at York

The Department of Sociology is pleased to offer an ESRC 1+3 studentship to commence in October 2010. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, Sociology was placed joint first, with 30% of its research considered to be ‘world-leading’, and a further 30% being judged as ‘internationally excellent’.

Eligibility

The ESRC makes full and partial funding awards. A full award covers fees and an annual, tax free stipend of £13,290 (2009/10 rates) for each year of study for UK students. EU students are eligible for tuition fees only. To be eligible for funding from the ESRC, you must meet their academic and residential eligibility criteria.

Please note that if you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you will not be eligible for this funding.

Procedure for applications

Applicants must complete two forms. The deadline for completed and submitted appllications is 4.00pm Thursday 23rd September 2010.

  • University Graduate Application form. This is to be submitted to the Graduate Schools Office by 4.00pm Thursday 23rd September 2010 to allow time for GSO to process it. It is important that you put the correct course on the University application form.
  • Applications for the 1+3 route are made online for the MA Social Research
  • 2 academic references are required for your university application. Please allow plenty of time for your references as your applications are incomplete without them. This is the area which causes most delays and it is essential that they are submitted before the deadline. Please ask for a copy of your references to also be sent directly to the Sociology office at sociology-pg@york.ac.uk
  • Please send only completed applications to Graduate School Office otherwise this will delay your application. Applicants must also complete the Departmental Application form (only available on request from the Sociology Office at sociology-pg@york.ac.uk. Any questions about the award should be directed to Dr Nick Gane at nbg2@york.ac.uk

A shortlist of students to be given further consideration for the awards will be made on assessment of these internal Departmental forms and references.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview as soon as possible after closing. These will take place on Thursday 7th October 2010.

Please note: to ensure that your proposal is as strong as possible, it is essential that you discuss your research plans with your prospective supervisor.

It is also advisable that you discuss with your intended supervisor whether your research ideas fall into the remit of the ESRC (information about the research supported by the Councils is available on their websites.)

Assessment criteria

  • Your previous experience/qualifications
  • A strong 2i or 1st class Honours degree is required
  • The quality of the research proposal
  • The content and coherence of the proposal
  • The proposed methodology and methods
  • The Department’s capacity to provide appropriate supervision
