Information for Visiting Researchers
Facilities
The following are provided for visiting researchers:
- University of York email address and use of University and Department computing facilities, including limited use of printing and photocopying.
- Use of the University's libraries
- Admission to research seminars and other public events
- Shared office space (hot desking)
Fees
Visiting academics are required to pay a fee, in order to cover the costs that the University will incur in hosting them. These are £250 a month or £3000 a year. These can be funded through grants held by the visiting researcher or covered by the visiting researcher themselves. We would require a confirmation of how you intend to pay for the fees and your stay here. Fees are typically paid before or on arrival.
Please contact us if the fees are problematic for you, as we do not intend for these costs to be prohibitive and there may be external funding opportunities that we can direct you towards that will help with these fees.
Visas and accommodation
The centre cannot provide advice on visas. For more information on visa applications, please visit the University's Immigration Advice Service website. If you require a visa to enter the UK it is essential that you seek advice on how to obtain the correct visa to suit the purpose of your visit.
The centre is usually unable to help with accommodation, although we can ask staff if they know of any local accommodation, if requested. Please contact Accommodation Services for more information in the first instance.
How to apply
Please email the following information to sei-admin-manager@york.ac.uk:
- A letter of application which includes
- Why you would like to spend time at SEI York.
- A clear indication of how you intend to pay the fees and for your stay here.
- A clear indication of the time period you wish to be in York, and your plans for finding accommodation.
- A letter of recommendation from your Head of Department or other senior academic/researcher who knows you and your work
- A short CV (1-2 pages) with full name, address and current research position.
- A c.1000 work research proposal which links to one of the Research Areas, or a particular member of staff, and clearly states exactly what you wish to do while you are in York.
How applications are assessed
Applications are considered once every 8 weeks by the Centre Research Committee and applicants will be informed as soon as possible after the meeting has taken place. Applications will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- how they fit with the Centre’s research interests
- the benefit to the Centre in terms of research engagement and potential for collaboration
- the strength of application or research proposal.
