David Efird Masters Scholarship

For September 2026 entry, the Department of Philosophy is offering the David Efird Masters Scholarship, which is in the form of a £5,000 reduction in fees.

The scholarship is aimed at all students pursuing research in the field of philosophy of religion, or research on contemporary issues or themes using a philosophy of religion perspective. The Scholarship is generously funded by the family of Dr David Efird, who taught at York from 2002 until his sudden death in 2020.

Eligibility

Open to International (including EU), International (non-EU) and UK (home) students.

Open to students in the Department of Philosophy.

To be considered for the scholarship, you must be holding an offer of a place on the MA in Philosophy or MA Philosophy by Research by 12 July 2026.

How to apply

Application deadline: Sunday 12 July 2026, 11.59pm BST

Students are not required to apply for the Scholarship separately, as they will automatically be considered for it on the basis of their MA application.

Candidates for this award must describe their plans to pursue research in analytic theology or the philosophy of religion in their application.

Terms and conditions

The awarding of the scholarship will be subject to candidates meeting any outstanding conditions of their offer of a place on the MA programme and registration on that programme.
