Picturing Grief / the exhibition
Posted on Friday 17 April 2026
A collaboration between the University of York and grief and creativity project Projecting Grief is bringing an exhibition of specially-commissioned artworks to York to kickstart conversations about loss.
The Picturing Grief exhibition will launch at Thin Ice Press, York on Sunday 3 May 2026. The exhibition will feature work by six artists all inspired by the University of York’s Grief Survey - a rich, searchable database of first-person experiences of grief - and will run throughout Hospice UK’s Dying Matters Week 2026 (4-10 May), the theme of which is ‘Let’s talk about Death and Dying’.
The artists each took a quotation from the Grief Survey and responded using a range of different mediums. The result is a fascinating and diverse showcase of grief-centred work featuring textiles, painting, collage, photography and more.
Dr Louise Richardson, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and one of the academics behind the Grief Survey, said, “We’re thrilled to be working with Projecting Grief for this exhibition and to give people a safe space think about the experience of grief, especially aspects of grieving that can be overlooked and difficult to articulate.”
