The University of York has unveiled the first artist impressions of its Mumbai campus, due to open its doors to students in September.
University of York Mumbai is based in the Powai Business District

The architect’s designs were revealed at a special event in Mumbai, where student counsellors, education and industry leaders, as well as alumni were invited to learn more about the University of York Mumbai.

The conceptual designs have been developed by Via Design India LLP, a New Delhi-based architecture and interior design practice led by principal partner Ram Joshi. The firm has worked with major international organisations and has received global recognition for its people-centred, experience-led design approach.

The interiors have been conceived as an open, flexible learning environment that prioritises collaboration, creativity and wellbeing. The designs centre on shared social spaces that can support informal study, group work and quiet individual learning side-by-side.

One of York’s most popular former residents - the Indian runner duck known as Long Boi - is planned for a large mural-style artwork as a focal point within the interior walkways, introducing bold colours, while referencing York’s local environment.

Provost of University of York Mumbai, Professor Lindsay Oades, said: “The designs reflect York’s commitment to creating flexible spaces that support learning, social connection and networking, while also combining Mumbai culture with the environment experienced by students in York.

“We are looking forward to seeing how the designs develop, but this first-look at the building gives potential students and staff an exciting glimpse of what life might be like on campus.”

It will include teaching and research facilities and a library, with food and sports provision available in close proximity to the campus building.

University of York Mumbai is based in the Powai Business District of the city, an area that has a strong mix of large corporations, startups and tech companies, and a rich mix of restaurants, cafés and shopping options. With Powai Lake and a number of green spaces, the district has a relaxed environment, with outstanding transport links and access to residential areas.

The presence of nearby institutions like IIT Bombay and other colleges feeds the area with a skilled talent pool, which supports employment and innovation.

The University of York Mumbai will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security, Business, Economics, and the Creative Industries. Programmes in emerging fields - AI, cybersecurity and the creative industries - will be delivered with global industry input, boosting job readiness in high-demand sectors and opening career pathways for Indian learners.

Applications for degree programmes are now open and more information can be found on the University’s Mumbai webpages.
