The Sheldon Memorial Lecture
Tony Power will speak about George Walker Milburn whose sculptures and carvings are familiar to the people of York, but who may not know about their creator.
Born in Goodramgate, York, in 1844, George Walker Milburn was the eighth of ten children, who grew up to become one of England's best known sculptors. He worked with leading architects of the Victorian and Edwardian era. In York he is known for his statues of William Etty in Exhibition Square, and George Leeman, railway entrepreneur, but his works can be seen in cathedrals, country houses and churches all across the country.
This lecture will honour the late Dr. David Foster, former Registrar, University of York, for his long chairmanship of the Oliver Sheldon Trust.
