Two-year appointment connects the department to a society of around 1,200 linguists in Germany and internationally.

Dr Imke Driemel of the Department of Language and Linguistic Science has been elected to the Advisory Board of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft (DGfS), the Linguistics Society of Germany. The two-year appointment began in February 2026, and Driemel attended her first board meeting in Cologne earlier this month.

The DGfS has around 1,200 members working at linguistics institutes in Germany and internationally, both within universities and beyond. The society builds connections within the scholarly community and with schools, media, and the wider public. Its five-member board oversees the society's finances, its annual conference, summer schools, and yearly awards recognising lifetime achievement and early-career work.

At the Cologne meeting, the board discussed the move of the society's journal, Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft, to Diamond Open Access; preparations for the next annual conference at the University of Jena; and the 2026 summer school at Bielefeld University. The board next meets in November at Bielefeld.
