Engagement with global language service providers helps keep the department's translation and interpreting teaching aligned with industry practice.

Dr Gustavo Góngora-Goloubintseff, Associate Lecturer in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science, was among a select group of UK academics invited to SlatorCon London 2026, the flagship conference run by language industry analysts Slator. The event brought together multinational companies, language service providers, software developers and academics working on translation and interpreting technologies.

Discussions focused on current developments and future trends in language technology, including the impact of AI and other emerging tools on the localisation industry. Speakers explored how these innovations continue to reshape professional practice, and how organisations and practitioners are adapting to rapidly changing demands.

For the department, taking part in events like this helps keep its translation and interpreting curricula aligned with professional practice and employer expectations. It also supports closer dialogue between higher education and industry, part of the department's wider commitment to giving students the knowledge, skills and opportunities to progress in their careers.
