Sociolinguists at York hosted regional dialect researchers at the Guildhall to explore linguistic variation across Northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Researchers from the Department of Language and Linguistic Science recently organised the 11th Northern Englishes Workshop (NEW11) in York city centre. The two-day conference, held from 9 to 10 September 2026 at the Guildhall, brought together scholars studying linguistic variation across the North of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The workshop was organised by Dr George Bailey, Dr Claire Childs, Dr E Jamieson, and Professor Carmen Llamas. The programme featured twenty-minute presentations alongside lightning talks, where researchers summarised their findings before presenting posters in a dedicated session.

Members of the department were prominently featured throughout the event. Dr Claire Childs presented her research on the Northern Subject Rule. Dr George Bailey presented collaborative research with Dr Laurel MacKenzie and Dr Danielle Turton on childhood mobility and regional dialect variation in England. And Professor Carmen Llamas presented research co-authored with Dr Vince Hughes and former York postdoctoral researcher Dr Thomas Kettig, comparing public perceptions of Newcastle and Middlesbrough speech varieties.
