Event details

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science will host the 11th Northern Englishes Workshop (NEW11) on 9–10 September 2026 at the Guildhall, a 15th-century building in the heart of York city centre.

Organised by George Bailey, Claire Childs, E Jamieson and Carmen Llamas, the workshop focuses on dialects of English associated with the linguistic north of the UK. Research on varieties from the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland is welcomed, along with work exploring varieties shaped through contact with Northern Englishes.

Registration is now open and includes lunch plus morning and afternoon refreshments on both days of the workshop. Three categories are available: student registration at £150 (open until 25 August), early bird registration at £150 (open until 24 July) and regular registration at £180 (available from 25 July to 25 August). The conference dinner can be booked separately for £36.25, also until 25 August.

Book your registration and optional conference dinner at the University of York online store: https://store.york.ac.uk/product-catalogue/languages-linguistics/11th-northern-englishes-workshop
