Students Curate Stained Glass Exhibition

Posted on 24 November 2014

'Light in the North: Modern Glass-Painters of York' is a new exhibition curated and mounted by History of Art MA students, led by PhD Candidate Katie Harrison.

Light in the North, St Martin cum Gregory‌The exhibition features York artists Harry Stammers (1902-1969), Harry Harvey (1922-2011), Sep Waugh, Ann Sotheran and Helen Whittaker, and also presents an opportunity to see a recently-conserved piece by eighteenth-century artist William Peckitt as well as a chance to learn more about the process of conservation.  It is spectacular to see the work of these artists under one roof, and alongside the stunning stained glass of St Martin cum Gregory, a Grade 1 listed building built before the 11th century.

Funding by the Institute for the Public Understanding of the Past (IPUP) has allowed research by a graduate student archeaologist and interns into the church itself and the parishioners commemorated in it, and the results of this research are also on display.

'Light in the North: Modern Glass-Painters of York' is hosted by the Stained Glass Centre at St Martin cum Gregory, St Martin's Lane, York and is open from 10.30am to 1pm every Saturday before Christmas.
