The Silicone Straw Company

The silicone straw company is dedicated to providing a sustainable and convenient alternative to single-use plastic straws. Inspired by the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and the negative impact of plastic waste on local rivers and landscapes, founder Charlotte Walsh drew on 15 years of manufacturing experience to develop a practical eco-friendly solution.

The company produces high-quality, food-grade silicone straws that are designed and manufactured entirely in the UK. This commitment not only reduces environmental impact but also supports the local economy and ensures ethical production standards. With a focus on simple, functional design, the company aims to make sustainable living more accessible while helping to protect the natural environment for future generations.

Charlotte has worked with the York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub to develop the export side of her business.

Charlotte said "I received invaluable help in the form of a grant that enabled me to exhibit at a major trade show in America. For a small business like mine, it was a significant leap—financially and logistically—but the risk paid off, thanks not only to the funding but also to the comprehensive support I received from Harriet, the Growth Hub team, and the international team at DBT. Harriet worked closely with me in the lead-up to the event, helping me refine my marketing strategy, branding, and tailor my messaging to suit different audiences. With DBT, we explored pricing structures in depth, analysed potential barriers to market entry, and discussed how to position my brand effectively in a competitive international landscape. The team also provided guidance on promotional materials, booth design, and digital outreach to ensure I made a strong impression at the show. Their insights gave me the confidence to approach the event with clarity and purpose.
In addition to this, I’m part of the WIN programme organised by Bev Mullen, which has been instrumental in expanding my global perspective. Last year, I joined a trade mission to the US that offered hands-on experience and helped me understand the nuances between different states—particularly in terms of consumer behaviour, regulatory environments, and pricing expectations. This experience was pivotal in shaping my export strategy and has directly influenced how I now price and market my products in the US.
As a result of these combined efforts—from the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), the North Yorkshire Council grant, and the strategic support from Harriet and her team—I’ve successfully gained seven new US customers. I’m now actively exploring new avenues of trade into Japan and Dubai, confident in the foundation that’s been built through these initiatives."
