The Lives and Pseudonyms of Literary Scholars: Notes and Queries 1849–1949
Event details
The talk will introduce a digital project identifying the pseudonymous contributors to Notes and Queries (1849–), both a monument of Victorian scholarship closely connected with the creation of such references works as the Early English Text Society series, The English Dialect Dictionary, The Dictionary of National Biography, and the Oxford English Dictionary, and an intimate venue for a 'virtual' intellectual community. After discussing the unique place of Notes and Queries within Victorian and Edwardian literary culture, it will frame the project in three ways: first, as an attribution index; second, as a prosopography of Victorian and Edwardian literary scholarship, and third, as a contribution to the history of literary knowledge.
